چکیده

abstract The theory of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of rectangular matrix pencils is complicated by the fact that arbitrarily small perturbations of the pencil can cause them disappear. However, there are applications in which the properties of the pencil ensure the existence of eigen-values and eigenvectors. In this paper it is shown how to develop a perturbation theory for such pencils. Estimating the Sensitivity of the Algebraic Structure of Pencils with Simple Eigenvalue Estimates

The sensitivity of the algebraic (Kronecker) structure of rectangular matrix pencils to perturbations in the coefficients is examined. Eigenvalue perturbation bounds in the spirit of Bauer–Fike are used to develop computational upper and lower bounds on the distance from a given pencil to one with a qualitatively different Kronecker structure.

A Geometric Approach to Perturbation Theory of Matrices and Matrix Pencils. Part I: Versal Deformations∗

We derive versal deformations of the Kronecker canonical form by deriving the tangent space and orthogonal bases for the normal space to the orbits of strictly equivalent matrix pencils. These deformations reveal the local perturbation theory of matrix pencils related to the Kronecker canonical form. We also obtain a new singular value bound for the distance to the orbits of less generic pencil...

Kronecker Structure and Distance Problems for Rectangular MatrixPencilsMichael Stewart

This paper describes structural properties of solutions to distance problems for rectangular matrix pencils. Properties are given for both the closest non-generic pencil and the smallest perturbation which yields a non-generic pencil. Smoothness results are given which suggest a natural geometric understanding of the problem and allow extension to more general distance problems.

On perturbations of matrix pencils with real spectra. II

A well-known result on spectral variation of a Hermitian matrix due to Mirsky is the following: Let A and à be two n×n Hermitian matrices, and let λ1, . . . , λn and λ̃1, . . . , λ̃n be their eigenvalues arranged in ascending order. Then ∣∣∣∣∣∣diag (λ1 − λ̃1, . . . , λn − λ̃n)∣∣∣∣∣∣ ≤ ∣∣∣∣∣∣A− Ã∣∣∣∣∣∣ for any unitarily invariant norm ||| · |||. In this paper, we generalize this to the perturbation ...

On perturbations of matrix pencils with real spectra, a revisit

This paper continues earlier studies by Bhatia and Li on eigenvalue perturbation theory for diagonalizable matrix pencils having real spectra. A unifying framework for creating crucial perturbation equations is developed. With the help of a recent result on generalized commutators involving unitary matrices, new and much sharper bounds are obtained.
